Creative Writing Workshops

Award winning author Jenny L. Cote opens up the world of creative writing for students of all ages and reading levels through fun, highly interactive workshops. Students are certain to laugh, be surprised, and have fun learning (without realizing it!) Above all students will be inspired to write colorful, creative stories and will want to read. Jenny has appeared to over 15,000 students at lower, middle, high school and universities in the US and abroad.

Jenny patterns her workshops after specific books she has written, showing students exactly how she crafts her books, from research to character development to imagery. It gives students real hands-on tools used by an author, with a behind the scenes look at how a book comes together, and what fun it can be. Surprising grand entrances, fun props, and humorous questions keep students engaged from the first minute, with smiles and hands raised to be chosen to do the next fun thing!

Workshop Options

#1      CREATE     (The Ark, the Reed, and the Fire Cloud)
Opening with the popular “Black Coat Story,” Jenny humorously illustrates a really lame story, followed by a really colorful story. She explains how creative writing is like painting a picture in your mind and writing what you see. Animating animal figurines, Jenny brings colorful characters to life, and describes the importance and, yes, FUN of doing research! Learn how to weave in surprises, action, tension and then end well.

#2      DREAM     (The Dreamer, the Schemer, and the Robe)
“Pharaoh Cote” makes a grand costumed entrance and engages the students on the subject of dreams. She’ll be joined by costumed Joseph volunteers who act out the different stages in the life of Joseph for a vibrant discussion on the evolving arc of a character, complete with dynamite dialogue, reality checks for writing historical fiction, and how to use artistic license.

#3      WRITE       (The Prophet, the Shepherd, and the Star)
Peanuts’ Linus opens the workshop with his video monologue about the Christmas story. Although this workshop’s theme centers on Christmas, it is applicable for any writing season. Many “wow moments” come from understanding the meaning of words and the impact they have on stories. Learn how incredible secrets are revealed from solid research, setting the state for imaginative writing to soar. Unpack two sharp tools that Jenny uses for organizing the writing process.

Grade groupings can be tailor made to match the needs of your school. Here are some options to consider: K-2, 3-5, 6-9, 9-12. Consider inviting parents to an event. Suggested group time: 60 minutes.

University/College Visit:
Introduction to Teaching Primer: Focus of talk illustrates Jenny's teaching methods to school kids, with a sample of her talk as the college students "become" the school kid audience for 30 minutes. Discussion of the tools Jenny uses to grab interest, hold attention, and make learning fun. Q&A on any area of interest with writing, editing and publishing. Suggested group time: 60 minutes.

Fees: $125 per hour plus mileage/expenses. A great option for an area is for several schools/groups to pool together to split costs which makes this an affordable opportunity.

Book Pre-Orders: Book pre-orders prior to the event allow streamlining of the process both for Jenny and the school. Books are personalized and signed in advance of the event, allowing more interaction time with the author and time for new book purchases to be made and signed at the event. A customized book pre-order form with school name and date will be provided. Book orders are due back no later than one week before the event. (see sample order form link on the right side bar).

Pre-Event Publicity: Book pre-order form PDF and link to Jenny's website can be posted on the school website, printed and emailed to school parents at least two weeks in advance.

Accelerated Reader Program: The Ark, the Reed and the Fire Cloud has been approved for the Accelerated Reader program nationwide offering 20 points of credit. The Dreamer, the Schemer, and the Robe has been approved for 21 points of credit. (see link on right side bar)

AV Needs: Jenny requires a projector with sound, mic, and small table for props. For lecture #1, she'll need a dry erase board or flip-chart with markers.

"Your enthusiasm caught the children's attention.  Teachers said they saw an immediate improvement in the children's journal writing, starting the day you were with us! It was a WONDERFUL day!"

Jeanne Borders, Administrator

THANK YOU for making Laura Hammer's day!!!! I teach her on Monday's at a co-op. Whenever, we have a child's choice for presentations, Laura always chooses the adventures of Max and Liz. Her face lights up!! I have never seen anything like it!! She actually acts out the story. Laura has got the class running out to buy the books!!! What one person's passion can do. My daughter attends the school that you visited , and I knew we had to invite Laura. This past Monday she came back to school, "FLOATING". You have made such a huge impact on her and my class. THANK YOU!!!

-Dawn Kienzl

Dear Greatest Author Ever,

My name is Lauren and you came to my school one day and talked about your books. Needless to say, I bought one and loved it! I'm 14 and super picky with the books I read. Your books make my top ten! They were EPIC! I couldn't put it down. Your way of writing, sticking to Biblical truth, and your outstanding characters made me laugh, cry, and everything inbetween. I dream of being a future author and have actually written a few of my own.  Some of my friends stuck their noses up because it wasn't a "big name series". There was no movie, no t-shirts, and frankly, no one had even heard of you. BUT THEY WERE WRONG. This book wasn't for extremely young readers, and it owns most of the other teen-trash we read now. I understand your passion for animals, and I especially enjoyed "The Ark, The Reed, And The Fire Cloud" because I've often wondered how God brought all the animals together. Great writing, fantastic characters, and a good message: Jesus. Do the world a favor and never quit writing! -Lauren 14

"My 8-yr-old son was in the later session you did, and he was so excited to start your books we had to download the first one to my Kindle last night and start it right away. He can hardly wait for Liz to come into the story. You were such a refreshing and motivating speaker. I hope you'll come back again!" - Jennifer Westall, Midway Covenant Christian School, Powder Springs, GA

"Hi, you are my favorite author because you are not as calm as the others and most of them who write non-fiction are boring but I like how you are not afraid to dream and put Christ in your stories. Thank you for coming to The Kings Academy both times- we all love you."
:) Hannah Neese

"You're what I hope to be like when I'm older... A strong Christian, someone who's not afraid to be a little crazy, and an author! Thanks for coming to The Kings Academy." :) Carly Coles

"I had to email you to say that 2 of my children (2nd & 3rd graders, Erin and Ryan) heard you speak at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School yesterday and could hardly wait to tell me about your book! Literally, they could not get the words out fast enough when they got in the car yesterday afternoon. They begged me to go to your website and buy the book for them...the one signed by Max and Liz, of course! It thrills me to see my children so excited about not just literature, but about Christian literature. Needless to say, I just ordered two books which I will give them at Christmas. Based on the reviews, I will probably be ordering more as gifts for friends. Thank you for sharing your gift of writing and God's word. I look forward to reading the book myself!”

“I just wanted to thank you for visiting my son's school, First Presbyterian Day School in Jackson, MS. My 3rd grader was riveted by your visit! My husband and I are reading The Ark, The Reed, and the Fire Cloud every night with our 2 youngest sons, Dylan (whom you met) and Adam, who is in the 2nd grade. Last night as Dylan said his prayers he thanked God for inspiring you to write this book. It was such a precious prayer! I wanted to pass along a note of thanks and encouragement to you, letting you know how much your work is appreciated. We anxiously await the conclusion of the book and will definitely be looking forward to your next work.”

“I love your book so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I usually don’t like to read but this book was so good I read 147 pages in one day!!!!!! That might not seem like much but it is to me. Tell Max and Liz I love them and never stop giving up on your talent on writing.” SINCERELY FROM WES 12 years old, Jackson Academy, Jackson, MS

“Hi! You came to our school (First Pres)and talked to us about the book. I LOVE YOUR BOOK!It is now currently my fav book, and probably will be in the future.I am writing my own book and hope it will be as good as yours some day! Good luck on your other books that you are writing! I'm sure that they will be just as good as the first.” Your Biggest Fan, Kelsey

“Hey I am one of the students that you met at First Pres Day School today! I can’t wait to read your book! I actually have already written a book but I have not gotten near to publishing it yet! But I am now starting a new book today and hopefully can tell you more about it soon! I was so excited about you coming and I am glad I got to hear you speak! Tell Max and Liz I said hey!” Molly

“I'm Dotsie and I go to First Pres. I'm in the middle of your book and I love it! I just wanted to tell you that I want to be a writer and you don't know how much you have inspired me!!!!”
